WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Heavy social drinkers show a pattern of brain damage similar to that seen in hospitalized alcoholics -- enough to impair day-to-day functioning, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.

Brain scans show clear evidence of damage, and tests of reading, balance and other functions show people who drink more than 100 drinks a month have problems, the researchers said.

"Oftentimes alcoholics are the last ones to know they have a problem," said Dr. Peter Martin of Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, who wrote a commentary on the report.

This is bad news. But I can't figure out why. I wonder if I have over 100 drinks a month. It seems like a lot. Let's see, I can't count that high, but hmm, well yesterday, ah what happened yesterday, oh yeah I had 97 drinks. Oh shit that means I can only have 4 for the rest of the month. Shit I already had five today. Hmm, what to do. I guess I'll have another drink.

Pax Acidus doesn't promote drinking, but it seems to work for us.

McCutcheon also likes running in parks, playing soccer and buffet diners with supermodels.

Sloth likes to swim and take boat cruises, even though he never jumped overboard.

Sloth's newest pastime is cuddling on the couch watching CNN and sipping Ameretto while constantly remarking: "Look at how stupid our military people are."

Why did I refer to myself in the third person? Isn't that the first sign of senility?

As far as I'm concerned booze doesn't kill you fast enough. Even though it's almost got me.

Sloth, all week I've been amusing myself thinking about your post about snuggling on the couch, sipping Amaretto and saying how stupid military people are. That just about sums up life in 2004, I think. Only I've developed a taste for Louis Jadot Beaujolais, the most expensive brand of French wine in the local stores, unfortunately, but I found it on sale. It's not only the best Beaujolais I've ever had, it's the best wine I've ever had period.
