I have recently discovered a Chic article in the Mojo issue I bought that had John Lydon of PIL on the cover. I thought this was kindof funny, as what probably occured was I saw the Chic article in there, said to myself 'oh yeah! I've been meaning to check them out forever', went to check them out and totally forgot about the article! Anyway, this article has pointed me toward chasing down the '79-'80 stuff that Chic did with Sister Sledge, as Mojo seemed to feel that other than the early Chic records, the stuff they did with Sister Sledge was the best stuff to get. Well, of course we all know the song "We Are Family" and I have no particular desire to own that song or even hear it really, but when you realize Chic were responsible for it and much of what were on those two Sister Sledge albums, well...I have them coming to me in the mail. Unfortunately the 1980 one is out of print on CD. Very frustrating. I saw a European seller charging $65 for it! I gave up and chose the cheap vinyl version instead.
Also, just incase you come across that Norma Jean album from '78 with Chic on it I talked about, don't bother. Without the extra bonus tracks on the CD (12" dance mixes) I'd sell it in a heartbeat. She's a great singer, it just sounds forced and the lyrics are pretty bad sometimes. Very disappointing as an album. But those 12" mixes!! Get down Chic-style! Perhaps not surprisingly, the liner notes were written by a guy from Mojo magazine. Infact, without the Brits, the album never would have been released on CD!
Believe it or not I have had my eye recently on some newer British stuff...heard the track Death In Vegas did with Liam Gallagher, liked that tune. Also I'm probably going to see Cooper Temple Clause when they come here on the 28th. One of the very few new Brit acts that have managed to get past my cynical "it's all overblown corporate crap" meter.
