A Few Nuggets of Music Trivia

Post by marky »

In my perusal of a certain friend's gigantic indie encyclopedia last night, I mined two golden nuggets of trivia and for anyone even slightly interested, here they are:

1) Iggy Pop was born to an English father and an American mother. This totally blows my mind, as he was one of only two godfathers of the whole punk/indie phenomenon (the other being of course, Lou Reed/Velvet Underground). David Bowie was apparently the only one who came to see him in hospital for heroin addiction. Certainly there is a huge connection between the two. "China Girl" etc.

2) John Lennon was a fan of the B-52's, said they were one reason he decided to start writing again. I'm just flabbergasted. Early B-52's rule, but would I have expected Lennon to take notice? Not really.

Also thanks to McC, I learned that Stereolab nicked the bassline for the first song on "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" from early 70's rap pioneer Gil Scot Heron. Thanks McC!

When do I get to hear that Steve Miller from '68, McC? We have to hook up again!! I always had a funny feeling that Mr. Miller was actually quite talented despite his perhaps nauseating 70's classic radio persona. The first time I even heard of him was the early 80's successful single "Abracadabra" in which he very impressively embraced the dawn of the New Wave synth/drum machine technology.

Mark you have made my night. And I had a pretty rank day, iced in, no hubby, no power, no shower, no HEAT!

When I was fifteen, my older brother got the Steve Miller greatest hits cd (I'm not sure what it was called), and I was disappointed when Abracadabra was not on it. His friend, this guy who I liked, told me that I had an uncanny knack for picking out the worst songs. Really disappointing!

Well, gee, Sara, I'm glad my musical insanity didn't alienate everyone this time out. I was there when "Abracadabra" came out and bought it and played it over and over. It certainly didn't sound like any of the new wave anyone from the U.K. or U.S. were doing at the time.

So I've never posted this drunk ... we'll see how this goes.

Rosie, if that's really you. I love your travel posts-- they're my all time favorite Rosie posts.

Mark, for me it is a quarter to two; the sweet smart hubby is working all night, and I'm having a hard time finding the keys, but I'll make do. My brother, his wife, and my friends Jeff and Rob, who I must say, I adore, all of them I love, otherwise I would not get this ridiculously drunk, have been over at my place for holiday drinking and arguments. We got drunk, and I proved how completely stupid I am when we played Taboo, and I said for a clue for "knot" you get these in your throat, and they argued that you get them in your stomach, and I said, but it's an idiomatic expression, and they said, "No, you get knots, in your stomach." To which my reply was, "but"

I like this postal service cd, which I'm playing while we play games and drink, and they said what are these "Frogger" sound clips? Do you know what I am talking about? Frogger -- Atari -- I said the 80's as a New Wave movement was great, and they said it is not artistic. I said . . . The Cure, come one, and they said "One hit wonders" about everyone other than the Cure; They are VH1 educated . . . Mark, Can you make sense of this and help a sister out? How can I say that there was great music. Maybe I am just too drunk to say anything other than "Me Gusta Postal Service"

Why would anyone shout to anyone who's listening that they're on a drunken coked up binge??? Do you seriously find that to be an admirable quality??? It amazes me that the 3 listed moderators of these boards think everyone should know that they're pathetic coke heads who can't survive a day sober!!! Are your lives so mundane that blow and booze are the only ways you can make it??? Shit, if things are that bad, come on downtown and I'll personally give you a shove off of the needle to end your monstrous suffering. Shit, I gotta be honest. My assistance with your euthanasia would not be altruistic. It's mainly just so I don't have to read or hear your blathering drivel any longer. Of course, there would be the bonus of ensuring the gene pool didn't get any weaker.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of simon I want to let eveyone know that I am posting under the influence of theraflu, robotussin (I"m not gonna bother to check spellings) and the lingering effects of drowsy gel caps from last night. If you have already guessed that the flu epidemic stopped off at Tommy towers, then you are correct. How bad was it? Fucking grim. I'm back in the saddle now, but to tell the truth, having the equivalent of a six day hangover sort of takes the edge off wanting to get ripped.

Sloth you are preaching to the choir about sherry and port. Have you been to the little wine store on 15th. They do great bargains on vintage ports (I love the tawny) I like my sherry medium. A friend of mine assured me an educated palate would lean to the fino. Did you know that there are some sherries that are taken chilled? It was news to me till he produced bottles of such. I still love my warm sweet port and sherry. (That's what we leave out for father christmas at home not milk and cookies)

Mark, thank god Mr Bowie was there for Iggy. He gave him the money for the habit in the first place, by reviving his career with The Idiot and Lust For Life. Didn't they both decide to move to Berlin to clean up at the very moment it was supposedly the heroin capitol of europe.

(dogs literally i mean) it is like ho.´s mouse farm.

Well first of all, I'm glad to see the talk of sherberts has flown over to this thread. I just posted under the Lovers section about Beaujolais Nouveau and such.

Sarah, (I'm going to use the "h", if that's okay, that's how I remember you) as soon as anyone wants to criticize some music by saying it's not "artistic", well...I'm just out of the argument right there. If they're saying it's "bad art" that is one thing, but calling ANY type of music "not artistic" is pretty nonsensical in my book. Of course it's artistic, that's what music IS for Nietzsche's/atheist's sake.

Tommy, I'll have to get on the sherry/port bandwagon soon. You're right about Bowie saving Iggy's career. He certainly did several times. I think it's kindof sad, because I just don't think Iggy works unless he's in full-on Stooges rock and roll "Ooow!" mode. I can't take Iggy seriously aside from pure balls-to-the-wall rock and roll. I loved "Lust For Life" but actually "The Idiot" never did much for me.
I'm no longer sure about the heroin thing, though...I read from another source that Iggy's stay around that time was in a mental hospital...who the hell knows. I also read his father was an English teacher. Surely there's some definitive biography out there that could settle things. But I haven't the energy to look for it. As long as a person has and appreciates The Stooges "Funhouse" album, you've pretty much got it made in my book as far as Iggy is concerned, but "Lust For Life" is a great album. I actually saw him live once in the mid-80's, and that was where I heard "Lust For Life" for the first time. The weird thing was that the beat of that song was so unique, it was unforgettable. You can't hear that song and forget that beat.

Now back to these compilations I have to make my way through of late 70's/early 80's UK bands. SO MUCH CRAP just to get to ONE good song!! But that's how it goes when you're such a music junkie like me that you've already investigated most everything from that time period. That reminds me, Liverpool...oh yes...I came across Second Layer...band of the Adrian guy who went on to be in The Sound...my punk book says he started out in a Liverpool band called The Outsiders. I really like Second Layer. Also I came across Deaf School again...fuck wish I could remember where...somewhere online...not in my book. When I figure it out I'll let you know.

Rosie, your talking to Simon, he doesn't merit it, nor any apologies. You'd do better to ignore him in the future. I have my preconceived notions as to who he is, btw.

I now am in love with Rosie. Simple, direct, cut to the chase, point well taken. Mark, on the other hand, overblown pompous rhetoric. No doubt you'll get an A on any thesis you write as any prof who reads it will give you a good grade just to keep from having to plow their way through the dull drudgery of your writing.

And you Simon, who are you trying to imitate? Because man, I'm willing to believe that you are not this insulting when speaking with people in real fucking life. Are you trying to make a case for a disgruntled Bukowski burnout this week? Perhaps next week you'll throw us some hip lines, straight out of some indie/hipster movie, and act like a tortured soul? Is it your constant flux of various personas that disables you from meeting people? Are you lonely? Maybe we should get together sometime if you're stuck in Wisconsin as well. It can be lonely, cold, and unforgiving. I've got this gay friend Simon, you'll like him. He's violent, insulting, and absolutely psychotic, you two would hit it off, most definitely.
