goodbye, paxacidus

this bulletin board used to be such a splendid place. one person posted something witty and then another responded in a funnier fashion. it was like a game, with the ball flying back and forth. and it was international and lively: when it did, the ball flew over thousands of miles. quite frankly, i ...

the third place

what a world cup, what a final game for my home team! the Cup has been more fun, and a greater success, than i and most anybody else had expected. it was not just a sports thing -- it had a strong element of global inclusiveness. foreigners and immigrants joined in and waved whatever flags they want...

ugly losers, ugly winners

klinsmann and his crew might have shown grace (and so do the german posters to the guardian blog), but there was blood on the streets in my town. it was quite late after the final whistle so immediately my daughter and i left the venue on my vespa and drove the winding road home, criss-crossing from...

forza italia

what a game! everybody i know liked the pulsating, hard-hitting yet not violent style of the match (even though a goal somewhat earlier would have increased the suspense). during extra time the folks at the open-air venue i was at http://www.dornbusch.com/pix/hafen2dienstag.jpg were saying "OK,...

hellish suspense

i predict 1:0 for italy today.

maybe it's because i would be happy to see germany live on saturday.

maybe because i am usually wrong, so making such a prediction could be a non-self-fulfilling prophesy.

wow sarah

pretty well put; very detailed arguments. i will study them and get back to you. as to perot however, his "sucking sound" argument is widely perceived to be a bit of a joke. nafta didn't kill u.s. jobs; nafta contrinuted to the prosperity of the clinton years. (at least, you will be hard-p...

and sovereignty is something that was gladly sacrificed until the new imperialists came along. the geneva convention restricts sovereignty: so what? so does the u.n. the principle should be democracy and transparency. you can sacrifice democracy to big business, which is done, or sacrifice democracy...

what's the problem? anything that would take the US closer to canada and mexico would be fine with me, if i were living over there. sorry to be smug, it is late in the evening. but really, who needs the death penalty, guantanamo, the cia or government without opposition? your constitution does not p...

sticking up

i pick germany to win, saint jude, and i agree to pay you 35 bucks in case france wins against germany in the finals.

this i say though i believe it close to probable that italy will kick germany tomorrow. especially after frings has been blocked out.

such are gamblers.

the philosophers of the ages have said you are happiest when you love strongest

no love being stronger than that of a parent to a child, you would have reasons to hope for wonderful feelings to come

looking back i can say that is true, and i hope it will be the same for you, jack.
